After winning 1st prize at the prestigious Hong Kong Altamira International Guitar Competition in 2018, Momcilo “Moma” Aleksandric toured the world as a performer and lecturer by appearing at events such as the 2018 Thailand International Guitar Festival (Bangkok), 2019 ShenZhen Fuge International Guitar Week (China), 2019 Melbourne Guitar Winter Celebration (Australia), 2019 Heredia’s Universidad Nacional International Artist Series (Costa Rica), and many others. He is equally devoted to solo and chamber music guitar performance, music composition, and historical/theoretical research. His article concerning Miguel Llobet’s work was published by the Guitar Foundation of America’s Soundboard Journal (2019), and he presented his compositional research at the 50th Guitar Foundation of America’s Convention in NYC (2023). He is dedicated to teaching students of various ages and backgrounds on multiple topics, from classical guitar performance to historical topics related to rock music, history of guitar, and music and movies.

Lectures include:

History of Guitar

The lecture explores the history of the guitar and the important guitarists throughout the past centuries. The lecture begins with the guitar’s predecessors such as the lute, vihuela, and theorbo, and ends with the Spanish guitar and its most recent transformations – acoustic steel string and electric guitars. The lecture features a historical part presented in a fun way with images and video examples. The historical part is supported by an interactive side in which students are invited to discuss the sound of various instruments including the Baroque lute, romantic guitar, classical, acoustic, gypsy jazz, and electric guitars, some of which will be brought for in-person lessons.

Music and Movies

The lecture explores seven important movies in which music plays an important role. It features several iconic and Academy Award Winning Movies: Psycho (1960), West Side Story (1961), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Amadeus (1984), The Doors (1991), Dancer in the Dark (2000), and Whiplash (2014). Throughout the lecture, students will learn how the musical choices shape the overall cinematography and the viewer’s perception of the movies. Students will also learn about the most important cinematic techniques and basic concepts related to the musical styles implemented in the movies.

History of Rock Music

The lecture explores the history of rock music and how it has shaped the world’s culture in the past decades. It begins with the contribution of African American artists such as Scott Joplin (ragtime music) and Robert Johnson (blues music) and continues to the artists from the present era. It explores the main characteristics of various sub-genres such as Rhythm and Blues, Rockabilly, Rock and Roll, Motown, Electric Blues, Psychedelic Rock, Latin Rock, Art Rock, Glam Rock, Soul, Funk, Heavy Metal, Grunge, etc. It features iconic acts such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and many others.
