John Bachay is a local historian and city guide with years of experience in historic preservation organizations. He has been a board member and officer for the Miami Design and Preservation League in Miami Beach. In addition, he was a past board member and guide for the Biscayne Mimo Association in Miami, as well as a past board member of the Miami Shores Village Historic Preservation Board. He is currently the archivist at Brockway Memorial Library in Miami Shores and a city guide for HistoryMiami.

The History And Architecture Of The Art Deco District in Miami Beach

A presentation on the history of the “billion dollar beach,” the architectural elements of tropical and nautical art deco, and the fight for historic designation of the iconic historic district.

Mimo Architecture In South Florida

A lecture on the Miami Modern (“MiMo”) architecture of the 1950’s. Includes discussion of the unique stylistic features of the mid-century resorts, apartment buildings and motels found in Miami Beach and Miami’s upper east side.

Miami’s History

This sweeping overview of Miami’s past covers the pioneer days of the 1880’s to the land boom of the 1920’s (and the subsequent bust of 1926) before heading into modern times. Other significant events include the Cuban immigration and its influence on the area, the events of 1980 (the Mariel boatlift, Haitian immigration, and the McDuffie murder and the ensuing race riots}. Learn how the “Magic City” has grown and evolved into a world class city!
