Why is this painting hanging in a museum? What makes this sculpture special? "This looks like something my grandchild can do!" All these observations and questions during a museum visit are reasonable, especially without context. Wendy Adler, ARTiculating Talks & Tours, can answer those queries and help you engage with art in a focused way. For the last 10 years, Wendy Adler has been presenting monthly art conversations and guided art tours for private groups and numerous communities in the Houston, TX and Denver, CO areas. Wendy truly enjoys introducing ways to engage with art for anyone with an interest, regardless of their previous art knowledge. Wendy has been a Docent at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Houston Contemporary Craft Center; Educationalist with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s Guild Speakers Bureau; Docent for the Post Oak Hotel and La Colombe d’Or art collections; and is currently a Docent at the Clyfford Still Museum.

Lectures include:

MEDIUMS WELL DONE: Art Techniques, Tools, and Terms

Do you know the difference between oil painting and acrylic? What the heck is gouache? Gesso? Lost Wax Casting? Artists have a lot of decisions to make about what to use and how to use it. Become familiar with the four main visual art forms (painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture) and why an artist may choose to use certain mediums over others.

BUILDING BLOCKS: The Elements & Principles of Art and Color Theory

Artists have a broad array of considerations to employ when they’re creating a piece of art. This session will discuss the various “ingredients” that go into an artist’s work and decision-making.

ISM ART FUN: The Evolution of Art through Time

Art is full of “ISM’s” – time periods of artistic progress and evolution. We’ll discuss some of the predominant styles of art over the last 200 years and how artists blend, bend, or break within these ISM periods.

HOW THE WEST WAS SPUN: The Influence of American Western Art

The art from mid-19th century America spurred the idea that America is a country of cowboys and Indians, an image that continues to this day. How did this art become so influential? We’ll discuss the roles of pioneering American artists and how they shaped the image of the American West.

SAY CHEESE: Portraiture

Commissioned portraits were once the best way for an artist to make a living, but then along came photography. While portrait painting didn’t go away entirely, it has definitely evolved over time. How did culture and technology force changes in portraiture? Learn about the various styles of capturing one’s likeness in art.

OLDIES BUT GOODIES: The Birth of Venus, The Last Supper, & The Sistine Chapel

Botticelli, da Vinci, and Michelangelo are considered three of the all-time greats in art. What makes their iconic masterpieces worth understanding? We’ll take a deep-dive into the techniques, meanings, and lasting impressions that these three works inspire.
